You like taking notes with a pen. What you do not like is scanning the pages afterward or typing them up before you can send them to someone. That is the problem Ophaya is built to solve: keep writing on paper, then sync your handwriting to the app and export a file you can use.
We make Ophaya smart pens, which capture handwriting from compatible writing surfaces. Plaud Note records audio and offers transcription and AI summaries. This comparison uses documented features; it is not an audio-quality test.
Keep the paper feel. Skip the scanning.
Write with the powered Ophaya pen on compatible Ophaya dot paper. Your notes can sync to the app without photographing every page. Export a PDF to keep the layout of your handwriting, or use OCR to turn a written passage into text and export it to Word. Check converted text before sharing it.
For a student, that might be a page of formulas to share with a study partner. For someone in a meeting, it could be a diagram and a few decisions to send to a colleague. A teacher can write out an explanation and share the page. You keep your own way of taking notes and spend less time turning the result into something other people can read.
Write now, sync later
The powered pen can capture handwriting while disconnected from your phone and sync after reconnection. You can focus on your notebook without keeping a phone screen open. The 3-in-1 set also includes an LCD writing tablet for temporary calculations and rough sketches, so every quick note does not need another sheet of paper.
Add audio when you need it
The Ophaya pen has no built-in microphone. Audio recording takes place in the app on your phone or tablet. Offline handwriting capture by the pen is a separate function; it does not mean the pen is recording sound.
You can use app recording when hearing the explanation again would help. Position the phone or tablet where it can capture the speaker and check playback first. Ophaya's syncing, OCR and app audio recording are free, with no app subscription. OCR converts your handwriting; it is not speech transcription. Transcription of recordings arrived separately in the October 2026 iPhone and iPad update, and the app's AI assistant can summarize and translate your notes.
Plaud's workflow starts with a recording
Plaud Note's official product page describes audio capture, transcription and AI summaries. At our September 20, 2026 check, its Starter plan included 300 transcription minutes per month, with optional paid plans. You can use that free allowance without a paid subscription; heavier transcription use may call for a different plan.
Estimate how much audio you would want processed in a typical month, then check the current allowance and plan terms. Evaluate a transcript using names and technical terms from your own work. Read the original context before treating an AI summary as an accurate record of a decision.
Which one would you use after the meeting?
| Your main need | What to evaluate first |
|---|---|
| Keep handwritten diagrams and notes | A smart pen's page capture and export workflow. |
| Turn spoken discussion into a transcript | An audio recorder and its transcription service. |
| Keep paper notes with occasional audio | Ophaya's app recording alongside its handwriting workflow. |
| Use recordings in a workplace or class | The organization's recording and data-handling requirements, before either purchase. |
Which one fits the way you take notes?
Choose Ophaya if you want to keep writing on paper and make those handwritten pages easier to save, edit and share. Consider Plaud if your priority is a transcript or summary of spoken discussion. They can serve different jobs: recording a conversation does not save the diagram you drew, and capturing handwriting does not transcribe everything said in the room. Our guide to AI pens compares recording pens, smart pens and scanning pens side by side.
Where does Limitless fit?
It is no longer a like-for-like new purchase option: Limitless's announcement says new Pendant sales ended on December 5, 2025. Existing owners should consult its current service and export information rather than an old shopping comparison.
If paper is central to your work, explore the Ophaya smart pen sets. If the transcript is what you will actually review, test the audio workflow first using a typical meeting or lesson.
