AI Pen: What It Is, the Main Types, Prices and Which One to Buy (2026)

An AI pen is a pen that captures your voice, your handwriting or printed text and passes it to an app or chatbot, which turns it into a transcript, a summary, a translation or an answer to a question. The AI almost never runs inside the pen. The pen does the capturing, and a phone app or a cloud service does the rest.

There are three main kinds: recording pens that capture what was said, smart pens that digitize what you write and add an AI assistant in the app, and scanning pens that read, explain or translate printed text. We make Ophaya smart pens, the second kind, so read our take with that in mind. Prices are from each brand's own store at our October 27, 2026 check.

What makes a pen an AI pen

What the pen captures decides what the AI can do. A recording pen has a microphone, so the app can transcribe and summarize a meeting, but it only sees your page if you photograph it. A dot-paper smart pen has a small infrared camera that reads a printed pattern, so the app gets your exact strokes. A scanning pen reads a printed line as you drag it across a book.

AI features often need a connection, because the heavy work happens on a server. Some brands also charge for AI minutes or add-ons, and the price table below shows which.

AI recording pens

A typical example is the Flowtica Scribe, which Flowtica's product page calls the "World's First AI Pen." It writes in gel ink and has a microphone that Flowtica says picks up voices up to 16 feet away. The app makes speaker-labeled transcripts and summaries, and its Snap It feature photographs your page so the notes sit next to the audio. A Scribe includes 300 advanced AI minutes a month, and paid Premium and Unlimited plans add more.

PenPower's Notique AI Pen uses the same label for something else. PenPower calls it a "Pocket AI Voice Recorder," and its page doesn't mention ink, so think of it as a recorder in a pen shape.

A recording pen suits people whose notes are mostly about what other people said, such as a sales rep on client calls. It's a weaker fit for diagrams and math, because your handwriting reaches the app as a photo rather than live strokes. We compare the two in recording pen vs smart pen.

Smart pens with AI in the app

These pens read a pattern printed on special paper, so every stroke appears in the app as you write. None of the three below records audio through the pen itself.

The inq writing set showed as unavailable, with a "Coming Soon" button, when we checked. The free app transcribes handwriting, including math and data tables, and has an assistant called Quin that "lets you interact with your handwriting." Our guide to inq goes further.

XNote Write is a pen and notebook set. XNote says the pen has no microphone and needs no subscription, and its free plan includes unlimited handwriting-to-text and "AI chat with your notes."

Ophaya's 3-in-1 set pairs the pen with a dot-code notebook and a 10-inch LCD writing tablet. Handwriting syncs live to the free Ophaya Pro+ app on iPhone, iPad and Android, and the pen stores about 1,000 pages offline. The app converts handwriting to editable text, and its AI assistant can summarize and translate your notes. That assistant runs on OpenAI's models through OpenAI's API, so the text you send it is processed in the cloud. The app records audio on your phone and links it to what you wrote, and the iPhone and iPad app can now transcribe those recordings. AI highlighter pens and scanning pens

An AI highlighter is a scanning pen shaped like a thick marker. You drag it along a printed line and it captures the words instead of coloring them. PenPower sells WorldPenScan Go as a "Digital Highlighter, Reading Pen and Translator." It works without a phone, reads text aloud, and has an AI Explain More tool that "breaks down tough vocabulary or sentences." Its translation needs Wi-Fi. Scanmarker Air, a "portable digital highlighter" that scans printed text into apps such as Word, lists no AI features on its page.

We'd point a language learner working through a textbook, or a student who finds long printed passages hard going, toward one of these. Since they read print, they can't take notes on a blank page.

AI pens that answer questions

Pens sold this way come in two kinds. One is a scanning pen connected to a chatbot. NEWYES says its Scan Reader Pen 4 Pro offers "AI-powered assistance (Powered by ChatGPT): By scanning text or taking photos, users can receive AI-generated answers," and lists homework checks among the uses. It was sold out when we looked, and NEWYES sells a ChatGPT subscription for it separately.

The second kind answers questions about your own material. Flowtica describes Ask Flowtica as "Natural language search, across every session," for finding a past decision in your recordings. XNote has chat with your notes, and inq's Quin works on your handwriting. Ophaya's assistant summarizes and translates; we don't sell it as a question-answering pen.

In both cases the pen only captures, and a language model writes the answer, which can be wrong. A chatbot can misread a scanned equation or give a confident answer to a question it misunderstood, so we'd check anything it tells you against the textbook or your notes.

Can you use an AI pen in an exam?

Not in a proctored exam. A pen that scans, records or connects to the internet is an electronic device, testing rules prohibit those, and using one to get answers during a test is cheating. The College Board's SAT prohibited devices list includes "Any cameras or recording devices" and "any other electronic devices" apart from the testing device. A student seen with one, even during a break, "may be dismissed immediately," and scores may be canceled. ACT's test day page says "No devices except approved calculator or watch," and "If a device is accessed or activated, you will be dismissed, your test won't be scored, and the device may be confiscated." Class exams have their own rules, but we'd treat any AI pen as banned unless the instructor allows it in writing.

The exception is an accommodation approved in advance. C-Pen says its Exam Reader 2 is "approved by various exam boards. E.g. JCQ (UK)," and calls it "An off-line closed system with no opportunity to store any assistive content." It can only be used to support text reading, and C-Pen tells students to ask their special educational needs coordinator, so it goes through the school rather than into your bag on test day. How to use an AI pen to study instead

• Write lecture notes by hand, read the AI summary, then close it and write down what you remember. The gaps show you what to reread.
• Do a homework problem first, then check it with a Q&A pen or chatbot, since asking for the answer before you try teaches you very little.
• Scan a confusing sentence from a textbook and rewrite the explanation in your own words (more in taking notes from a textbook).

Which kind of AI pen fits you

Start with what you'd want to find a week later. If it's the exact words a client used on a call, a recording pen or an AI voice recorder gets you closer. If it's a flowchart from a lecture or a page of calculations, pick a pen that captures strokes, since a photo of a page is harder to search and edit.

For most students we think a smart pen fits better. A biology student can write Cornell notes by hand, convert them to text and ask for a summary the week before an exam. A team lead who runs long meetings and rarely draws will get more from a recording pen. If you'd fill a notebook every month, add the cost per page of paper to the pen price.

Privacy and the cloud

An AI feature that summarizes or answers questions is probably sending your text, photo or audio to a server. Ours does: Ophaya's assistant uses OpenAI's API. Flowtica says it does not allow third-party AI providers to train on your recordings. Ask people before you record them, and check your employer's or school's rules on uploading notes to cloud AI before you rely on it for anything confidential.

Where Ophaya fits, and where it doesn't

We make Ophaya for people who think on paper, like a student who draws diagrams in lectures. The pen captures every stroke on Ophaya dot paper or on the Ophaya LCD writing tablet, and the AI assistant works on those notes. You don't pay a subscription to sync, convert handwriting or record audio in the app.

It isn't the right pen if you want to write in a notebook you already own, since plain paper takes the ink but nothing reaches the app (we explain why in can you use a smart pen on regular paper). It has no microphone, so for a hands-free recording of every word a recording pen is the better tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI pen worth it?

It is if you already take a lot of notes and lose time rewriting or searching them. If you write a few lines a week, a phone scan and a free AI app will do most of the same work.

Is there a pen with ChatGPT built in?

Not in the sense of a chatbot living inside the pen. NEWYES says its Scan Reader Pen 4 Pro gives answers "Powered by ChatGPT," and Ophaya's assistant runs on OpenAI's models through OpenAI's API. In both cases the pen gets your text to the model, and the model does its work outside the pen.

Do AI pens need a subscription?

Some do. Flowtica includes 300 AI minutes a month with the Scribe and sells plans for more. XNote says its pen needs no subscription. Ophaya's app listing showed no in-app purchases at our check. Read the brand's plan page before buying.

Can an AI pen read any paper?

A recording pen writes on any paper because it captures sound, not strokes. Smart pens need their own printed paper. Scanning pens read printed text.

Does an AI pen record audio?

Recording pens do, through a microphone in the pen. Smart pens such as inq and Ophaya record through the phone instead and link the audio to your notes.

Can an AI pen translate my notes?

Some can. Scanning pens translate printed text, and Ophaya's AI assistant can translate your handwritten notes once they're in the app. For anything important, have a fluent speaker check the translation.
