A dot-paper smart pen you can order today costs about $70 to $280 on the brands' US stores at our October 2026 check. Ophaya sets are $69.95 to $99.95, the Neo smartpen R1 is $89, the inq writing set is $165 and the Moleskine Smart Writing Set is $279. The costs people forget come later: the special paper (about $22 to $60 for 600 pages a year) and any paid app plan.
We make Ophaya smart pens, so weigh our view with that in mind. Prices for other brands are list prices on their own US stores or App Store listings at our October 2026 check; Ophaya prices are from ophaya.com on October 9, 2026. None of the totals include tax, shipping or ink.
Smart pen prices in 2026, side by side
Check what's in the box before you compare prices. Neo sells the R1 with a case and a cable but no notebook, so you buy paper before you write your first captured page. Ophaya, inq, Moleskine and the Echo 2 include some.
| Pen or set | List price | In the box | Offline storage | Subscription or paid AI plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ophaya Smart Pen + Mini Notebook | $69.95 | Pen, 32-page mini notebook | About 1,000 pages | None for syncing, OCR or recording |
| Ophaya 3-in-1 set | $99.95 | Pen, notebook, 10-inch LCD writing tablet | About 1,000 pages | Same app |
| Neo smartpen R1 | $89 | Pen with cartridge, case, USB-C cable | Up to 20 A4 pages | Neo Studio 2 is free, no in-app purchases listed |
| Neo smartpen M1+ | $129 | Pen, two refills, case, USB-C cable | Up to 1,000 pages | Same app as the R1 |
| Livescribe Echo 2 | $119.95, sold out at Livescribe | Pen, pocket starter notebook, cartridge, cap, cable | Up to 20,000 A4 pages, about 200 hours of audio | Livescribe+ is free, no in-app purchases listed |
| inq writing set | $165, US orders only | Pen, one notebook | Up to 75 pages before you sync | Free app; for AI chat "usage limits may apply" |
| Moleskine Smart Writing Set | $279 | Smart Pen, large Smart Notebook, ink refill, magnetic charger | Not checked | Optional Bundle + AI, $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year |
Our other sets fall in between: Smart Pen + 5 Notebooks at $79.99, Smart Pen + Notebook at $85.99 and Smart Pen + LCD Writing Tablet at $95.99.
We'd read the storage column before the price column. Twenty pages is plenty if your phone sits on the desk every class, and tight if you spend a weekend writing exam review away from it. What smart pen paper costs over a year
A dot-paper pen captures only on its own brand's paper. Ours writes ink in a drugstore notebook, but nothing reaches the app, so you keep buying that brand's paper.
Take a student who fills about 300 pages a term, two terms a year. That's 600 pages. Divide each list price by its pages, then round up to whole packs.
| Paper | Price and pages | Per page | 600 pages takes | Year's cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Livescribe Letter 3-subject notebook | $10.95, 150 sheets (300 pages front and back) | $10.95 / 300 = 3.7 cents | 2 notebooks | 2 x $10.95 = $21.90 |
| inq A5 spiral notebook | $9, 156 pages | $9 / 156 = 5.8 cents | 4 notebooks (624 pages) | 4 x $9 = $36 |
| Neo N Memo notebooks, 5-pack | $14.90, five 50-page pads (250 pages) | $14.90 / 250 = 6 cents | 3 packs (750 pages) | 3 x $14.90 = $44.70 |
| Ophaya A5 dot refill paper, 2-pack | $19.99, 240 pages | $19.99 / 240 = 8.3 cents | 3 packs (720 pages) | 3 x $19.99 = $59.97 |
| Ophaya mini notebook | $15.99, 32 pages | $15.99 / 32 = 50 cents | 19 notebooks (608 pages) | 19 x $15.99 = $303.81 |
Livescribe has the cheapest page, which helps only if you already own a Livescribe pen, since the Echo 2 was sold out. Its store counts the notebook in sheets, so the 300 pages assume you write on both sides.
The N Memo pads are 148 by 83 mm, less than half the writing area of one of our refill sheets. We priced them anyway because Neo's letter-size N College Notebooks (three for $16) don't list a page count.
Our refill paper is the priciest full-size option here. It's six-hole paper that refills the 120-page leather-cover notebook ($29.99). The A5 5-pack ($29.99 for five spiral notebooks) costs less per page, and our notebooks and refills guide has the math for every pack. Please don't run a semester of lectures on mini notebooks, though: $303.81 is about five times the refill paper's bill. We'd keep one in a jacket pocket and write lectures on A5.
Which smart pens charge a subscription
If you want a smart pen without a subscription, Ophaya, Neo, Livescribe and inq all qualify at our check, and every app in the table was free to download. The money question is AI, and Moleskine is the only brand that put a price on it: its Moleskine Notebooks app sells a "Bundle + AI" plan at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. Moleskine's pages don't say which features need the plan, so ask before you count on one.
inq calls its app "free-to-use," and its app page says you can chat with your notes but that "usage limits may apply." Neo Studio 2 and Livescribe+ were free on the App Store with no in-app purchases listed.
The Ophaya Pro+ app has no subscription for syncing, OCR or recording audio through your phone. Its AI assistant summarizes and translates notes. At our October 4, 2026 check the App Store listing showed no in-app purchases. We can't promise how AI will be priced later, at our company or anyone else's, so check the listing on the day you buy.
Two-year cost of three smart pen setups
Over two years the same student writes 1,200 pages. Packs are rounded up again.
| Setup | Pen | Paper | App plan | Two-year total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ophaya Smart Pen + 5 Notebooks, then one more A5 5-pack | $79.99 (five notebooks in the box) | $29.99 for five more (ten notebooks in all) | $0 | $109.98 |
| Neo smartpen R1 with N Memo pads | $89 | 5 x $14.90 = $74.50 (1,250 pages) | $0 | $163.50 |
| Moleskine Smart Writing Set with the yearly Bundle + AI plan | $279 | Extra Smart notebooks, $24 to $35 each, not counted | 2 x $79.99 = $159.98 | $438.98 before extra notebooks |
On these numbers our five-notebook route is the cheapest of the three, about $54 less than the Neo R1 with N Memo pads, and our pen holds about 1,000 pages offline where the R1 holds 20. Ten of our A5 notebooks should cover 1,200 pages, but check the page count on the listing before you plan a whole degree around it. The result depends on which of our papers you buy. Start with the $69.95 mini set and fill a leather-cover notebook with refill paper instead, and two years comes to about $200, more than the Neo. The Neo route gives up page size, since the N Memo pads are small.
An inq set plus eight $9 A5 notebooks comes to $237, a little less counting the notebook in the box. In the Moleskine row, two years of the optional AI plan cost more than two years of Neo paper. We'd skip it unless you'd use it every week.
Cheaper ways to digitize notes
If you write a few pages a week, a smart pen may never pay for itself. These cost less and ask more of you.
The Rocketbook Core is $34.99 in Executive size or $38.99 in Letter, with a Pilot FriXion pen and a microfiber towel. You write, scan each page with the free Rocketbook app (it has handwriting recognition), then wipe the page with a little water. It isn't a smart pen, so a page goes digital only when you scan it.
Your phone camera costs nothing extra. Photograph each page of a notebook you already own after class. It works while the habit holds; a page you forget stays on paper.
A plain LCD writing tablet saves nothing, so you'd photograph it before erasing. Our 10-inch tablet ($29.99 alone) saves pages only with the Ophaya pen (write, tap save, then erase), so it trims the paper bill for pen owners rather than replacing the pen.
Frequently asked questions
Do smart pens need a subscription?
Ophaya, Neo, Livescribe and inq didn't need one at our October 2026 check. Moleskine sells an optional Bundle + AI plan ($9.99 a month or $79.99 a year) without saying which features need it, and inq says usage limits may apply to its AI chat.
Why are smart pens so expensive?
A dot-paper pen packs an infrared camera that reads the printed pattern, a Bluetooth radio, memory and a battery into a pen body, and the company has to keep its app working for years. Extras add more: the Echo 2 has a microphone and room for about 200 hours of audio. Once you write every day, we think paper matters more than the sticker price.
Is a smart pen cheaper than an iPad?
Yes. An iPad (A16) starts at $449 and the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is $79 at Apple's US store, $528 before any apps. Our cheapest two-year Ophaya setup above is $109.98 with paper. The iPad does far more than notes, so it wins if you'd use it for everything else too. Our smart pen vs iPad and Apple Pencil comparison goes further.
How much is a Livescribe pen in 2026?
The Echo 2 lists at $119.95 but was sold out on Livescribe's US store at our check. Livescribe's site now points buyers to inq, whose writing set is $165 and takes US orders only.
Can I use regular paper to save money?
Not if you want the notes on your phone. Our pen writes ink on any paper but captures only on Ophaya dot-code paper or the Ophaya LCD writing tablet. Livescribe says its smartpens work only with Livescribe dot paper, and Neo says the M1+ works only with its Digital Paper.
