The best gifts for law students help with the work that fills their days, which is mostly reading cases and turning them into outlines, much of it in the library. For a 1L, that usually means a book stand, highlighters and page flags, good noise-cancelling headphones, or a print Bluebook if they don't already own the 22nd edition. For someone studying for the bar exam, the most useful gifts buy back time, such as meals they don't have to cook or a hotel room near the test site.
We make Ophaya smart pens, so weigh our pick accordingly. The pen is on this list for one kind of student, and nearly everything else is something we don't sell.
Gifts for reading and outlining
The Bluebook, 22nd edition
The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation is now in its 22nd edition. The print copy is wire-bound so it lies flat, and it had a list price of $49 plus shipping on the publisher's site at our October 2026 check. It suits a 1L working from a hand-me-down 21st edition. Ask before you buy, because a student who already has the new one doesn't need two, and some would rather have the online version ($42 for one year for one person at the same check).
Highlighters and page flags
Some law students "book brief": instead of writing a separate brief for each case, they mark the facts, the holding and the court's reasoning in different colors right in the casebook. A multi-color pack of highlighters costs well under $15, and a few packs of page flags make it easy to find Tuesday's case when the professor cold-calls on it. A student who reads cases on a tablet has no use for them.
A book stand for casebooks
Casebooks are big hardcovers that don't like to stay open. An adjustable book stand holds one at an angle next to the laptop, so the student can read and type notes without pinning pages down with a coffee mug. It's less useful for someone who reads most cases online. For the reading itself, our guide to taking notes from a textbook has a section-by-section method that carries over to casebooks.
A smart pen and notebook, for outlines drafted by hand
Plenty of students type their outlines from day one. Others think better on paper, and a few classrooms are going device-free. The University of Chicago Law School is prohibiting laptops, tablets and phones in its core 1L classes for 2026-27, the Chicago Tribune reported. Bans like that are still the exception: in 2022, academics told the ABA Journal that prohibiting laptops was relatively rare at law schools.
Our Smart Pen + Notebook set ($85.99) comes with a gray-cover A5 notebook of Ophaya dot-code paper. The pen writes in ink and has an infrared camera that reads the printed dots, then syncs the pages over Bluetooth to the free Ophaya Pro+ app, where handwriting converts to editable text for a typed outline. Proofread that text, especially case names; our guide to converting handwriting to text covers other ways to get there. Two catches: the pen only captures writing on Ophaya dot-code paper or the Ophaya LCD tablet, and the student needs an iPhone, iPad or Android phone for the app. In a room where every electronic device is banned, a smart pen probably counts as one, so they should ask the professor. Skip it for a student who types every note or already writes on an iPad with a pencil.
Gifts for the long library day
Noise-cancelling headphones
Headphones are one of the pricier ideas in this guide, and for someone who studies in a busy library they may also be the most used. Fit and comfort are personal, so buy from a store with a generous return window. A student who already owns a pair, or who prefers foam earplugs and silence, won't need them.
A backpack that carries two casebooks and a laptop
Look for wide padded straps and a laptop sleeve, and check the main pocket fits a large hardcover. If they bought a new bag in August, pick something else.
A leak-proof travel mug and a power bank
Library days run on coffee, and the outlet near the good table is always taken. An insulated mug that fits a backpack side pocket and a small power bank with a long cable are both cheap and get used daily. Ask which phone they have so the cable matches.
Comfort and health gifts
A seat cushion or lumbar pillow
Library chairs are built to survive decades of students, which is different from being comfortable at hour five. A firm seat cushion or a small lumbar pillow can travel from carrel to classroom. Someone who studies at home in a chair they like can do without one.
Food they don't have to cook
If their finals fall in December, a grocery delivery gift card or a freezer full of meals from home is a practical present. It suits students living alone. Ask about allergies and freezer space before you show up with six lasagnas.
A reason to leave the building
A class pack at a local gym or climbing wall, or a good pair of walking shoes, gives them an excuse to step away from the outline. Pick something without a fixed schedule, since their calendar is full of things they can't move.
Gifts for bar exam takers
If they're sitting the February exam, the holidays fall during bar prep: NCBE lists the next Multistate Bar Examination on February 24, 2027, and the one after that on July 28, 2027.
Time back
We'd put money toward meal delivery or a few weeks of a cleaning service, or simply take over their errands, before buying any object. Anything that asks for their time, like a weekend trip in the middle of prep, can wait. Give that one after the exam, with a card saying so.
A hotel room near the test site
If the test site is a long drive from home, paying for a room on the exam nights spares them a dawn commute on exam mornings. Ask first, because some people sleep better in their own bed, and book early.
An exam-day kit that follows the rules
Check the exam-room rules for the state where they're testing before you buy anything for the day itself. New York's bar exam security policy (revised July 15, 2026), for example, wants permitted items carried into the exam room in one clear, re-sealable plastic food storage bag, allows foam, silicone or gel earplugs without cords, and bans electronic devices of any kind and watches of any kind. So in New York a nice new watch stays home, and so does any smart pen, ours included. Headphones are banned there too, so give them for the study months and leave them out of the exam-day kit.
Small gifts for law students under $25
| Gift | Good for | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|
| A box of their favorite gel pens | Students who outline or draft exam answers by hand first | They type everything |
| Index cards | Drilling rule elements and case names | They already use a flashcard app |
| A big jar of foam earplugs | Noisy libraries, roommates, and (where allowed) exam day | They can't stand the feel of them |
| A coffee shop gift card | Almost anyone, especially near campus | They don't drink coffee or tea |
| A small desk plant that's hard to kill | A carrel or desk they'll sit at all year | They travel home for long breaks |
Tips for buying a gift for a law student
- Ask what they already own. Our guess is that the Bluebook and headphones are the likeliest duplicates.
- Before buying any gadget, ask which phone or tablet they use and whether their professors allow devices in class.
- Check the return window. Ophaya orders ship within 48 hours in the US (transit time is extra), with 30-day returns that are free within the US. If a gift has to arrive by December 25, order in the first half of December.
- When unsure, a gift card is fine. A digital Ophaya gift card comes in $25, $50, $100 or $150, which lets them decide whether a smart pen fits the way they study.
If they're deciding between handwriting and a laptop in class, the research on handwriting vs typing notes is more mixed than the headlines suggest.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Christmas gift for a 1L?
Something for the long reading days: a book stand, highlighters and page flags, headphones, or a print Bluebook if they don't have the 22nd edition. If their finals fall in December, food they don't have to cook is just as welcome.
What do you get someone studying for the bar exam?
We'd give time and quiet rather than things: meals, chores done for them, or a hotel room near the test site. Save trips and anything else that needs their attention for after the exam.
Can you bring a smart pen to the bar exam?
Not in New York, where the security policy bans electronic devices of any kind, and you should assume the same elsewhere until you've read that state's rules. Use it during the months of studying and leave it at home on exam day.
Is the Bluebook a good gift for a law student?
Yes, if they don't already own the 22nd edition. Ask first, since a duplicate copy is money that could have gone to food or headphones.
