Rocketbook Problems and Fixes: Pages That Won't Erase, Ghosting and Scans That Fail (2026)

Most Rocketbook problems come down to the pen or the light, and Rocketbook's own help pages cover the fixes. If ink won't wipe off or leaves a gray shadow, wipe the whole page with the microfiber towel and a few drops of warm water instead of using the pen's eraser, and check...

Most Rocketbook problems come down to the pen or the light, and Rocketbook's own help pages cover the fixes. If ink won't wipe off or leaves a gray shadow, wipe the whole page with the microfiber towel and a few drops of warm water instead of using the pen's eraser, and check that you wrote with a Pilot FriXion pen. If the app won't scan a page or sends it to the wrong place, scan in brighter light with no shadow on the page, and keep the QR code and the black border clear.

We make Ophaya smart pens, which digitize handwriting a different way, so we aren't neutral about Rocketbook. The fixes below are Rocketbook's own, from its help center, FAQ and product pages as they read on October 27, 2026.

Quick fixes by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Try this first
Ink won't wipe off Dry ink, or a pen that isn't FriXion A drop of water; for permanent ink, test rubbing alcohol in a corner
Gray ghosting The FriXion eraser Clean the whole page with warm water and the towel
Writing vanished Heat, such as a hot car A few hours in the freezer
Pen skips Lotion film, or a tired pen Warm-water clean; an hour in the freezer for the pen
Page won't scan Dim light or the border out of frame More light and the whole border on screen
Wrong destination A shadow or old ink on a symbol Erase stray marks; avoid a ceiling light overhead

Rocketbook ink not erasing, or leaving ghosting

Rocketbook's cleaning guide (updated August 7, 2026) says to wet one corner of the microfiber towel, "just enough to dampen it, not soak it," wipe, then dry the page with the dry part. Let pages dry before you shut the notebook, or they "may stick together."

Ghosting after erasing

That gray outline of last week's notes usually comes from the eraser on the FriXion pen. Rocketbook's page on keeping a notebook in good condition explains: "Since the eraser uses heat to clear the ink, ghosting may occur." The FAQ tells you to avoid the eraser altogether, because "It can scratch the coating of the pages."

Rocketbook suggests cleaning about once a month, without soap, and says stained pages should recover with "a thorough cleaning with warm water and the microfiber towel." Keep the water warm, not hot: FriXion ink turns invisible above 140 degrees F, so hot water can hide writing instead of removing it. Some shadow can stay. Rocketbook says "Minor staining or ghosting is normal and won't affect performance," so if it doesn't show in your scans, we'd stop scrubbing.

You used the wrong pen

Rocketbook's pen guide says non-FriXion ink is permanent and may not come off. A 2021 Rocketbook post on common mess-ups suggests scrubbing softly with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer, but warns that "some of these cleaners can remove the dots, lines, or symbols from your page," so try a corner first. Finish with warm water and the towel, since Rocketbook says solvents can leave a film.

Notes disappeared or came back

The pen guide says FriXion writing "may temporarily disappear" in a hot car, near a heat source or in very hot water, and that cooling the notebook below 40 degrees F (4 degrees C), such as a few hours in the freezer, can often restore it. Ink you cleared with the eraser was only heated too, so a cold day can bring it back. Ink wiped off with water and the towel is physically removed, and Rocketbook says it won't return.

Microwave erasing is for the Rocketbook Wave only. Rocketbook's warning is blunt: "If you're not sure if you own the Wave, assume you don't and don't put your notebook anywhere near the microwave."

Rocketbook ink smudging or the pen skipping

Rocketbook doesn't publish a drying time. The pages are waterproof, so ink can't soak in as it does on paper, and a fresh line smears if your hand drags through it. Give new writing a moment, and if you're left-handed, rest your hand on a scrap sheet.

When the pen skips or writes pale, check the page first. Rocketbook says oils, lotions and solvents, including those in pre-moistened wipes, "may leave a film on your pages," and that warm water and the towel usually remove it. Hand cream before class is enough to do it. If a clean page doesn't help, the FAQ says a FriXion pen that still has ink but has stopped writing may recover after an hour in the freezer or with a moistened tip.

Which pens work with Rocketbook

The pen guide (updated August 7, 2026) says Rocketbook notebooks are designed for Pilot FriXion products, including FriXion Ball and Clicker pens, ColorSticks, Fineliners and Markers, though availability varies by region. Rocketbook's how it works page is stricter: "In the US and Mexico, we recommend using only Pilot FriXion pens." In most of Europe and some other countries, BIC Illusion pens can be used as well. Rocketbook hasn't tested other heat-erasable pens.

On the FriXion Clicker, press the pocket clip, not the top, to extend the tip. The FAQ adds that a finer 0.5 mm tip lasts longer.

Rocketbook app not scanning, dark scans and wrong destinations

Pages won't scan or come out dark

The app captures a page by itself once it sees the whole sheet, so if nothing happens, the camera can't find the page. Rocketbook's Pages Not Scanning article suggests:

  • Turn on more lights or open the shades. Natural light often scans better than the phone's flashlight.
  • Watch for your own shadow under an overhead light.
  • Lay the notebook flat on a plain background. Solid black works best.
  • Get the whole page, black border included, on screen, starting about a foot away.
  • Rest your elbows on the table and hold the phone level, in portrait.
  • Wipe the lens, and don't write on the QR code.
  • On Android, choose the highest resolution in Scan Settings, ideally a 16:9 option.

If the bottom of your notes is missing, Rocketbook says anything below the end of the dot grid or lines "will be automatically cropped out."

If the app keeps failing, Rocketbook's update page says "There are also many scanning apps that can be used with Rocketbook" and names Adobe Scan and Genius Scan. You'd send the file on yourself, since only Rocketbook's app reads the destination symbols.

Scans go to the wrong destination

The seven symbols at the bottom of each page match destinations you set in the app, and an X over one sends the scan there. Rocketbook's article on scans sending to the wrong destination names two causes: a light directly overhead casting a shadow the camera reads as a mark, and an old mark that wasn't fully erased. Wipe the symbol row and step out from under the ceiling light. If a multi-page scan splits up, the bundling article says to mark the same symbol on every page.

Worn pages and when to replace a Rocketbook

Looked after, a notebook "will work like new for years to come," says the FAQ. Rocketbook's care pages warn against the pen's eraser, solvents and standard adhesives such as Post-it notes (its own reusable sticky notes are fine).

We'd replace one when the symbols, border or QR code are scratched or stained badly enough that scans fail in good light, and Rocketbook won't cover that. The FAQ says "We do not offer any warranties, nor do we offer replacements for wear and tear or damage from standard use," though it does replace manufacturer defects and shipping damage, as its support team decides, with photos and proof of purchase. At our October 27, 2026 check, a new Rocketbook Core listed at $34.99 for the Executive size (36 pages) and $38.99 for Letter (32 pages). Our reusable notebook guide compares it with LCD boards.

If scanning is the part you dislike

If you've fixed all of this and still find scanning tedious, or you keep wiping pages you forgot to save, a smart pen takes that step away. The Ophaya pen has an infrared camera that reads a printed dot pattern, and each stroke goes over Bluetooth to the free Ophaya Pro+ app on iPhone, iPad or Android as you write. Away from your phone, the pen stores about 1,000 pages and syncs them when you reconnect.

It only captures on Ophaya dot-code paper or the Ophaya LCD writing tablet, though, and that paper isn't erasable, so you keep buying notebooks or refill paper (our notebooks and refills guide works out the cost per page). Rocketbook pages are reusable, and the notebook costs far less than our $85.99 Smart Pen + Notebook set, which ships with a gray-cover A5 dot-code notebook. If you scan a page or two a week, we'd keep the Rocketbook. The Rocketbook alternative page has the full comparison, and Ophaya vs Rocketbook covers who picks which.

Frequently asked questions

How do you clean Rocketbook pages?

Wet one corner of the microfiber towel with a few drops of warm water, wipe the whole page, then dry it with the dry part. Skip soap.

Can you use a regular pen on a Rocketbook?

Rocketbook doesn't recommend it, because ink from pens that aren't FriXion is permanent and may not come off. In the US and Mexico it recommends Pilot FriXion pens only.

Why did old notes come back on my Rocketbook?

They were probably cleared with the pen's eraser, which hides FriXion ink with heat. Cold can bring it back, so wipe pages with water and the towel instead.

Is the Rocketbook app still supported?

BIC announced on December 4, 2025 that it would wind down Rocketbook. Global Printing & Packaging has since bought the brand, and Rocketbook's About page says "All Rocketbook products and the Rocketbook app remain fully supported." Our Is Rocketbook discontinued? explainer has the full timeline.
