A reusable notebook is a notebook you can wipe and write on again instead of filling and throwing away. Most of them do one of two things: erasable paper you clean with a damp cloth (Rocketbook is the best-known), or an LCD writing tablet you clear with a button. Some also save your pages to your phone, either by scanning them with the camera or, with a smart pen, by recording each stroke as you write.

Which one suits you comes down to one question: do you need to keep what you wrote? If the page is scratch work, any reusable surface will do. If you need a copy later, look at how each one saves, because that is where they differ most. We make Ophaya smart pens and an LCD tablet that works with them, so we are one of the options below. Prices are list prices from each brand's own store at our checks in early October 2026.

The three kinds of reusable notebook

Erasable paper notebooks use synthetic pages and ink that comes off. You write with a special pen, scan the page with an app if you want to keep it, then wipe it clean.

LCD writing tablets have a pressure-sensitive screen instead of paper. A stylus leaves a line, and a button clears the whole screen. A basic board keeps nothing after you clear it.

Smart pen setups are reusable in a different way. With Ophaya, the same pen writes on dot-code paper or on our LCD tablet, and every stroke goes to the phone app while you write. On the tablet you save the page and then erase it, so the surface is reusable and the notes still end up on your phone.

Erasable paper: Rocketbook and similar

The Rocketbook Core starts at $34.99 for the Executive size (36 pages) at our October 5, 2026 check; the Letter size (32 pages) was $38.99 at our October 1 check. Each comes with one Pilot FriXion pen and a cleaning cloth. Rocketbook says the pages erase "with a towel & a bit of water," and its app scans pages and uploads them to services such as Google Drive, Dropbox and OneNote. Extra FriXion pens cost $9 for a three-pack from Rocketbook at our October 1 check.

It feels closest to a normal notebook, and you never buy paper again. The catch is that the page is only saved if you scan it before you wipe it. If you erase a page you forgot to scan, it's gone. Erasable ink is also made to disappear, which is a poor fit for anything you must keep for years, like lab notes or a signed record.

LCD writing tablets

An LCD tablet is the cheapest way to stop using scrap paper. At our October 1 check, Boogie Board's Basics listed at $16.99 and the Jot at $24.99. They are good for scratch math, phone messages and kids' drawings, and the screen clears in a second. Press clear and the page is gone, though. Our guide to how LCD writing tablets work explains why a basic board can't store anything.

Boogie Board's Blackboard 2.0 Smart Scan ($44.99 at that check) adds a way to keep pages: you scan the board with your phone camera in the Blackboard app before you clear it. That works like Rocketbook's scan, with the same risk of erasing before you scan. Our Boogie Board alternatives guide compares the models.

A reusable tablet that saves while you write

The Ophaya Smart Pen + LCD Writing Tablet set is $95.99. You write on the 10-inch tablet with the Ophaya pen, and the strokes stream over Bluetooth to the free Ophaya Pro+ app on iPhone, iPad or Android as you write. Tap to save the page in the app, then press erase on the tablet. The habit to build is save, then erase. The tablet runs on a small coin battery that lasts around a year, and the pen charges over USB-C.

Because the app has the strokes, you can convert handwriting to editable text, export the page as PDF, Word or PNG, and ask the app's AI assistant to summarize or translate your notes. The app can also record audio on your phone and link it to what you wrote. There's no subscription for syncing, handwriting-to-text or recording. The tablet on its own is $29.99, but it needs the Ophaya pen to save pages.

The trade-off is the screen. Lines show blue-green, and it's a tablet, not paper. If you want the feel of a page, the next option fits better.

A refillable notebook with a smart pen

Paper isn't reusable, but the notebook can be. Our leather-cover notebook ($29.99, 120 pages) takes A5 dot refill paper, sold as a 2-pack of 240 pages for $19.99, so you keep the cover and swap the paper. Every page you write with the Ophaya pen goes to the app, and the paper version stays on your shelf as a permanent record. The cheapest paper per page is the A5 five-pack, and our notebooks and refills guide works out the cost per page for each option.

This is the right pick if you need a paper record that won't fade and a digital copy you don't have to scan.

Which reusable notebook should you buy?

If you want paper feel and only save a few pages, Rocketbook is simple and cheap to run. Build the habit of scanning before you wipe.

If the notes are throwaway, such as a grocery list or a quick sum, a basic LCD board is the cheapest answer and there's nothing to manage.

If you want to reuse the surface and still keep everything, pick something that saves while you write. That's the case for a smart pen on an LCD tablet: a student can work through a page of calculus, save it, erase, and start the next problem without photographing anything. If you'd rather have ink on paper as well, use the refillable notebook with the same pen.

Our smart pen vs Rocketbook comparison goes deeper on the two most common choices.

Frequently asked questions

Are reusable notebooks worth it?

They are if you write a lot of pages you don't need to keep, or if you're happy to scan the ones you do. If you need every page saved, a notebook that saves while you write avoids the "I wiped it before scanning" problem.

How do you erase a Rocketbook?

Rocketbook says to wipe the pages with a damp cloth or towel. It includes a cleaning cloth and a Pilot FriXion pen in the box.

Can you save notes from an LCD writing tablet?

A basic LCD board can't save anything; you can only photograph it. Scan models like the Blackboard 2.0 Smart Scan save a page when you scan it with your phone. With an Ophaya pen on the Ophaya tablet, each stroke goes to the app while you write.

Is a reusable notebook better for the environment than paper?

It replaces a lot of scrap paper, which is the main point for most people. Each option still has parts to replace, such as FriXion pens for Rocketbook or the coin battery in an LCD tablet, so the gain depends on how much paper you would otherwise use.

Reusable, and it saves

Write, save, erase, repeat

The Ophaya pen and 10-inch LCD tablet send every stroke to your phone, so you can clear the screen without losing the page.
