The Nuwa Pen is a camera pen that copies handwriting from ordinary paper, and at our October 2, 2026 check it was still sold as a pre-order with a waitlist. If you need something now, the alternative depends on why Nuwa appealed to you. To keep writing on paper you already own, look at a sensor pad such as the Huion Note X10 or simply scan pages with your phone. If you want pages to appear on your phone as you write, with audio linked to your notes, a dot-paper smart pen from Ophaya, inq, Neo smartpen or Moleskine does that today.
We make Ophaya smart pens, which use dot paper, so we are one of the options below. We have tried to be fair to Nuwa and to the other brands, and we say where each one is the better buy. Prices for other brands are list prices from their own stores at our October 1 and 2, 2026 checks.
What the Nuwa Pen is
Nuwa puts three tiny cameras near the tip, a setup it calls the TRIDENT camera system, plus motion sensors. Its product page says you can "write in your favorite notebook" and the pen captures every stroke, with "no special paper" needed. That is the big difference from every pen on this page that reads a printed dot pattern. The Nuwa+ app runs on iOS and Android, converts handwriting to text in more than 95 languages according to the spec sheet, and includes an AI assistant that summarizes notes and pulls out action items.
A few other details from Nuwa's own pages. The pen weighs about 28 grams and takes a standard D1 ink cartridge, and the FAQ says it uses black ink only. Nuwa quotes at least 5 hours of continuous writing per charge and 18 hours in total with the charging case, although one line on the product page says 2 hours. PDF export is included, and PNG and SVG export are marked "coming soon." We found no audio recording feature on the product page or in the FAQ.
Where Nuwa stands in October 2026
The product page lists the pen at $299, down from a regular $349, as a "crowdbuilding pre-order offer." It also shows a waitlist sign-up and says the last pre-order batch sold out. Nuwa describes crowdbuilding as developing the pen together with early customers, who report notes and rate accuracy to improve the software. WIRED's smart pen guide, updated in August 2026, still called it "the upcoming Nuwa Pen."
Check the subscription terms before you order. Nuwa's FAQ says text conversion and Augmented Notes run through Nuwa+, its cloud service, and that orders placed during 2025 received a free lifetime Nuwa+ subscription. It does not say what later buyers pay. The product page, meanwhile, says no subscription is required. Those two statements may both be true for different features, but we would ask Nuwa which features work without Nuwa+ before paying for a pre-order.
None of this means the pen is a bad idea. Writing on any paper is something dot-paper pens like ours cannot do. It is a new product on a waitlist, though, and an AI service sits behind its main features.
If writing on any paper is the point
A sensor pad: Huion Note X10
A sensor pad moves the tracking under the page. The Huion Note X10 is an A5 folio with a pad that follows a battery-free ink pen through the paper. It listed at $89, down from $119.99. Huion says a regular A5 notepad under 10 mm thick works, though it recommends its own refills so you stay inside the working area. It stores up to 50 pages offline, can record voice while you write, and exports PDF, JPEG and MP4. The catch is that "any paper" means any paper that fits on the pad, and the pad comes with you.
A free phone scan
If you only keep a few pages a week, use the camera you already have. On an iPhone or iPad, the Notes app has Scan Documents under the attachment button. On Android, the Google Drive app scans pages to PDF. A scan captures the finished page rather than the writing as it happens, so nothing syncs while you write. Our guide to converting handwriting to text covers the free apps that read a scan.
If you want pages to sync while you write
These pens all read a printed dot pattern, so they only capture on their own brand's paper. On regular paper they write like ordinary ballpoints and nothing reaches your phone. Our explainer on using a smart pen on regular paper goes into why.
Ophaya
The Ophaya pen has an infrared camera that reads our dot-code paper and syncs live over Bluetooth to the free Ophaya Pro+ app on iPhone, iPad or Android. It stores about 1,000 pages when your phone is away. OCR turns handwriting into editable text, and pages export as PDF, Word, PNG, GIF or MP4. The app records audio on your phone or tablet (the pen has no microphone) and links the recording to what you wrote. Sets start at $69.95 with a mini notebook, and the 3-in-1 set adds a 10-inch LCD writing tablet the same pen writes on. There is no subscription for syncing, OCR or audio.
inq
inq comes from Anoto, the company behind Livescribe. The writing set was $165 with one notebook. The pen holds up to 75 pages before it needs to sync, the phone app records audio, and transcripts handle math and tables. inq also has a web app for reading notes on a laptop. See our inq guide for the details.
Neo smartpen
Neo smartpen's store had the dimo at $59 and the M1+ at $129, sold without a notebook. The M1+ stores up to 1,000 pages. Neo is a good fit if you want to pick the pen and the notebook separately, and our Ophaya vs Neo smartpen comparison adds up the two-year cost.
Moleskine Smart Writing Set
Moleskine's Smart Writing Set was $279 with a pen and a large notebook. You are paying for the notebook and the design as much as the technology. Our Moleskine Smart Writing Set guide covers its app and costs.

How to choose
Start with the paper. If you have a favorite notebook, or you write on printed handouts and forms, a dot-paper pen will frustrate you, and the Huion pad or a phone scan is the better fit until Nuwa ships widely. If buying notebooks from one brand is fine, a dot-paper pen does the job today.
Then think about audio. Nuwa lists none. Ophaya, inq and the Huion Note record sound. In the Ophaya and inq apps the recording is linked to your handwriting, so you can replay what was said behind a line. For lectures and client calls that is often the feature people use most. Ask before you record anyone.
Last, read the fine print on the app. Ophaya's syncing, OCR and audio are free. Nuwa's text conversion depends on a cloud service whose price for new buyers we could not find. A pen you plan to use for years is only as good as the app behind it, which we cover in what happens to your notes when a smart pen company changes platforms.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy the Nuwa Pen now?
At our October 2, 2026 check, Nuwa's product page sold it as a $299 pre-order and showed a waitlist, saying the last pre-order batch had sold out. Check the page for the current status.
Does the Nuwa Pen need special paper?
No. Nuwa says its three cameras capture handwriting on any paper. That is the main thing that sets it apart from dot-paper pens such as Ophaya, inq, Neo smartpen and Moleskine.
Does the Nuwa Pen need a subscription?
Nuwa's FAQ says text conversion and Augmented Notes run through Nuwa+, its cloud service, and that 2025 orders got Nuwa+ free for life. It does not list a price for later buyers, so ask Nuwa before ordering.
Does the Nuwa Pen record audio?
We found no audio recording feature on Nuwa's product page or FAQ. If you want audio tied to your notes, Ophaya and inq record on your phone and link the sound to what you wrote.
Does the Ophaya pen work on any paper?
No. It writes ink on any paper but captures only on Ophaya dot-code paper or the Ophaya LCD writing tablet. For capture on your own notebook, a sensor pad or phone scan is the better choice.
