The Moleskine Smart Writing Set is a Bluetooth smart pen paired with a Moleskine notebook whose pages carry a hidden grid. The pen reads that grid as you write and sends each stroke to Moleskine's app on your phone or tablet, so you get a paper page and a digital copy at once. At our October 1, 2026 check, its list price on Moleskine's US store was $279, and the pen captures writing only on Moleskine Smart paper.
We make Ophaya smart pens, so weigh our view accordingly. Below we explain how Moleskine's system works, what it costs to run and who should buy it anyway, then compare Neo smartpen, inq, Rocketbook and our own pen.
How the Moleskine smart pen and paper work
Moleskine calls the lineup the Smart Writing System. Its Smart Notebooks, Smart Cahiers and Smart Planners use what Moleskine calls Ncoded paper. Its FAQ puts it this way: "All you need is a Moleskine Smart Notebook featuring the Ncoded technology: a hidden grid embedded within the paper enables the Moleskine Smart Pen to recognize both individual pages and where you are on each page."
The pen writes in real ink. When your phone isn't nearby, Moleskine says the pen stores up to 1,000 pages and uploads them when you reconnect. The spec sheet lists 8 to 11 hours of continuous writing per charge.
A regular Moleskine Classic won't work. The ink lands on the page, but there is no grid to read, so nothing reaches the app. Every dot-pattern pen works this way, ours included; our guide to using a smart pen on regular paper explains why.
Older Pen+ models and today's pen
Moleskine says the system was "completely reinvented in 2022." Earlier owners have a Pen+ or Pen+ Ellipse; the current set ships with a redesigned Smart Pen. The FAQ says "Both our previous Smart Pens are compatible with our current Smart Notebooks." Battery is the main gap: Moleskine quotes about 5 hours of continuous use for the Pen+ Ellipse.
Made with NeoLAB
Moleskine's own user guide for the current pen (model NWP-F130) carries a compliance declaration from NeoLAB Convergence, the company behind Neo smartpen. NeoLAB's partnership page says Moleskine "evolved from a traditional analog company into a hybrid one through NeoLAB." We found no official statement that Neo's pens and app work with Moleskine Smart notebooks, so don't plan on mixing them.
The app: Moleskine Notebooks, formerly Notes
Moleskine's product pages still say "Notes App," but the App Store and Google Play listings now call it Moleskine Notebooks (formerly Moleskine Notes). It runs on iPhones, iPads and Android devices. Moleskine's FAQ says "The new Notes App is currently not available on Windows OS," which matters if your workday lives on a Windows laptop.
Moleskine lists these features:
- Handwriting transcription in "over 20 languages"
- Search and tags across your Smart notebooks
- Exports as images, documents or files, plus vector exports of drawings
- Voice recordings tied to a page, started from a "voice record" icon below it
- Smart Planner events that sync to a calendar on your device
The pen's spec sheet lists no microphone, so expect your phone or tablet to do the recording, as with inq and Ophaya.
The 2026 rebuild added accounts with automatic cloud backup. Its release notes tell existing users to recreate their accounts and to contact support before uninstalling, and a July update lets you keep selected notebooks on your device only.
The app is free to download, but its App Store listing shows optional "Bundle + AI" in-app purchases at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. The name points to the new AI tools, yet the Moleskine pages we read don't spell out what's free, so check in the app before relying on a feature.
What it costs at our October 1, 2026 check
List prices on Moleskine's US store:
- Smart Writing Set (pen, large ruled Smart Notebook, spare refill, magnetic charger): $279
- Smart Cahier Bundle (pen, charger, two XL plain Smart Cahier journals): $200
- Smart Notebooks: $23 to $36
- Smart Cahier two-packs: $14 to $26
- Smart Planner 2027: $35 ($40 for the PRO version)
- Pen refills, five-pack: $10
The pen wasn't listed on its own, so the Smart Cahier Bundle is the cheaper way in. Returns can be requested within 14 days of receipt.
Paper is the running cost. A student who fills four large Smart Notebooks in a school year, at $28 or $29 each, spends about $115 on paper on top of the pen.
Who should stay with Moleskine
The paper is the reason to buy this set, and it's a good one. The Smart Notebook has ivory, 100 gsm, acid-free pages that lie flat at 180 degrees, with the elastic closure, ribbon and back pocket of a regular Moleskine. Nothing else here looks like a Moleskine on a meeting table.
We'd stay with Moleskine if you:
- already own Smart Notebooks or a Smart Planner and like them
- plan on paper and want written events in your phone's calendar
- sketch and want vector exports
- work on an iPad or Android tablet and never need Windows
Look elsewhere if you need a Windows app, want cheaper paper, or would rather not wonder which features sit behind a plan.
Moleskine Smart Writing Set alternatives
Neo smartpen
Neo is the closest relative. Neo's shop listed the M1+ at $129 at our check and says it stores up to 1,000 pages offline. The Neo Studio 2 app was free on the App Store with no in-app purchases shown; it extracts text from handwriting and can record audio. You write in Neo's own notebooks. Our Ophaya vs Neo smartpen comparison goes deeper.
Livescribe and inq
Livescribe's US store showed its smartpens sold out at our check, and its help links point LivePen owners to inq. The inq writing set costs $165 with a pen, one notebook and what inq calls the "free-to-use inq app" for iOS, Android and web. Your phone records the audio, the pen holds "up to 75 pages" before syncing, and inq offers a 100-day trial.
Rocketbook
Rocketbook isn't a smart pen. You write with an erasable Pilot FriXion pen, scan pages with the free Rocketbook app, send them to Google Drive, OneNote and similar services, then wipe the pages with a damp cloth. The Rocketbook Core (Next Gen) listed at $34.99 to $38.99. For a few pages a week, it's the cheapest route here, but nothing reaches your phone until you scan. See our Ophaya vs Rocketbook comparison.
Ophaya
Ophaya is our pen. Its infrared camera reads a printed dot pattern, so like Moleskine it captures only on its own surfaces: Ophaya dot-code notebooks or the Ophaya 10-inch LCD writing tablet. Notes sync live over Bluetooth to the free Ophaya Pro+ app on iPhone, iPad and Android, and the pen stores about 1,000 pages offline. OCR converts handwriting to editable text (check it before sharing). The app records audio on your phone or tablet, linked to what you wrote, and exports PDF, Word, PNG, GIF or MP4, with audio in the MP4. There's no subscription for syncing, OCR or app recording.
The LCD tablet is the biggest difference. With the 3-in-1 set, you write on the tablet with the same pen, the strokes stream to the app, you tap to save, then erase. It's handy for scratch math or a quick diagram on a call. Save before you erase. The set lists for less than half the price of the Smart Writing Set.
Moleskine still wins on the notebook itself, the planner and drawing exports. Ophaya won't read Moleskine paper, and a Moleskine pen won't read ours.

Does the Moleskine smart pen work on regular paper?
It leaves ink, but nothing is captured. Moleskine says you need a Smart Notebook with Ncoded paper, which has a hidden grid the pen reads.
Does the Moleskine set need a subscription?
The app is free. The App Store lists an optional "Bundle + AI" plan, but Moleskine's pages don't say which features need it.
Is the Moleskine smart pen made by Neo?
Moleskine's user guide for the current pen carries a NeoLAB Convergence compliance declaration, and NeoLAB lists Moleskine as a partner. NeoLAB also makes Neo smartpen.
Can I buy the Moleskine smart pen on its own?
Not from Moleskine's US store at our check. The Smart Cahier Bundle was the cheapest way to get the pen there.
