The best gifts for engineers are tools they'll put to work. For an engineering student, that's often a calculator they can take into the FE exam, a stack of engineering paper for problem sets, or a starter electronics kit for weekends. For a working engineer, look at the desk and the workbench. A precision screwdriver kit, a monitor arm or a book about why some designs fail will get more use than a novelty mug.
We make Ophaya smart pens, so weigh our pick accordingly. It appears once, in the sketching section, and apart from our gift card we sell nothing else on this list. Before you shop, find out their discipline and look at what's already on their bench. A civil engineering senior who plans to sit the FE exam in the spring and a mechanical engineer who rebuilds bikes in the garage want very different things.
Gifts for problem solving and sketching
A calculator on the NCEES exam list
NCEES, which runs the FE and PE licensing exams, limits which calculators can come into the room. Its calculator policy names the only models acceptable for 2026 exams: Casio models with fx-115 or fx-991 in the name, the HP 33s and HP 35s, and Texas Instruments TI-30X and TI-36X models. TI pitches the TI-36X Pro at engineering courses where graphing calculators may not be allowed, and Casio says its fx-115ES Plus is on the NCEES list. Ask before you buy. A student who got one freshman year doesn't need a second, and if their course names a model, get that one.
Engineering paper and a good mechanical pencil
If they work problem sets on paper, a few engineering computation pads (the pale green grid paper) or graph paper pads make a cheap gift they'll use to the last sheet. Add a metal-bodied mechanical pencil in 0.5 or 0.7 mm and a tube of leads. Someone who does all their scratch work on a tablet can skip this one.
A smart pen, for sketches and derivations they want to keep
Our 3-in-1 set ($99.95) has an Ophaya smart pen, a dot-code notebook and a 10-inch LCD writing tablet. The pen writes in ink while an infrared camera in it reads a printed dot pattern, so a free-body diagram or a circuit sketch shows up in the free Ophaya Pro+ app as they draw it. On the LCD tablet they can work a problem, save the page, then erase and start the next one. Pages export as PDF or PNG, which is handy for sending a sketch to a lab group. If the phone is in a locker during lab, the pen stores about 1,000 pages and syncs them later. The app's OCR turns handwritten words into editable text, which they should check before sharing. Keep it for words, though: equations will not convert reliably.
The pen captures writing only on Ophaya dot-code paper or the Ophaya LCD tablet, so their usual engineering pad stays paper only, and the app needs an iPhone, iPad or Android device. An engineer who already sketches on an iPad or spends the day in CAD doesn't need it. Our guide to taking math notes has a page layout that works on plain paper too.
Gifts for tinkering and building
A precision screwdriver kit
The iFixit Mako Driver Kit has 64 precision bits, a driver handle, a flexible extension and a case whose magnetic lid has a sorting tray built in. iFixit lists it for opening phones, laptops, game consoles and small appliances. It was $39.95 on iFixit's site at our October 27, 2026 check. Good for anyone who takes things apart to see how they work, but peek at their bench first, since a tinkerer may already own a full bit set.
An Arduino starter kit
The Arduino Starter Kit comes with an Arduino Uno board, a breadboard, sensors, a DC motor, a servo, a small LCD and a 170-page projects book that walks through 15 projects. Arduino says no prior experience is required. It was $110.00 on Arduino's US store at our October 27, 2026 check. We'd give it to a mechanical or civil engineering student who wants to learn some electronics, or to a high schooler thinking about engineering. An electrical engineer who programs microcontrollers at work will find it too basic.
Gifts for the desk and focus
A monitor arm
A monitor arm gets the screen off the desk, which frees room for drawings and parts and lets them raise the screen to eye height. Check first that their monitor has mounting holes on the back and that the clamp fits the edge of their desk.
Noise-cancelling headphones
An open-plan office or a shared lab makes a long stretch of focused work hard to get, and good noise-cancelling headphones help. They're the bigger gift we'd pick for an engineer whose bench you can't see. Ask whether they like over-ear or earbuds, and make sure they don't already own a pair they love.
Books for engineers
Prices are list prices on the publisher's page at our October 27, 2026 check.
| Book | What it is | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design, Henry Petroski (Vintage paperback, $19.00) | Case studies of design failures, including the Kansas City Hyatt Regency walkway collapse and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which twisted apart in a mild wind in 1940 | Civil and structural engineers, and anyone who likes a good post-mortem |
| Structures: Or Why Things Don't Fall Down, J. E. Gordon (trade paperback, $21.99) | Stress, shear, torsion and fracture explained without the jargon, with examples that include suspension bridges, dams, eggshells and kangaroos. One chapter is called "How to Design a Worm." | Mechanical and civil students, or a relative who wants to understand what the engineer in the family does |
| The Design of Everyday Things (Revised and Expanded Edition), Don Norman (Basic Books paperback, $21.99) | Why smart people can't tell whether to push or pull a door or which burner a knob turns on, and how better design fixes that | Product, software and industrial engineers, or anyone who designs things other people use |
A senior engineer may own all three. If you can't check their shelf, a bookstore gift card covers you.
Experiences and classes
A makerspace membership
A makerspace has tools that won't fit in an apartment. Depending on the space, that can mean 3D printers, a laser cutter or a wood shop. Look up what the nearest one has and what a month costs, and ask whether members need a safety class before they can use the bigger machines.
A class in something hands-on
An evening class in welding, machining or CAD at a community college or makerspace gives a desk-bound engineer something to build. Check the schedule against their calendar before you pay, and put the start date on the card.
Small gifts and stocking stuffers
| Gift | Good for | Skip if |
|---|---|---|
| Digital calipers | Measuring parts for a repair or a 3D print | They have a good pair at work and no projects at home |
| A pocket multimeter | Checking batteries, fuses and wiring on weekend projects | They're an electrical engineer with a bench meter |
| A headlamp | Site visits, crawl spaces and working under a car | They never do field work or repairs |
| A rubber duck for the desk | The old programmer's trick of explaining a bug to the duck out loud, line by line, until you hear the mistake | They don't write code |
Tips for buying a gift for an engineer
- Ask about their discipline and whether they're still in school. "Engineer" covers someone checking bridge loads and someone writing firmware for a thermostat.
- Before buying a calculator for someone heading toward the FE or PE exam, check the exact model name against the current NCEES list.
- Order early. Ophaya ships US orders within 48 hours, plus transit time, so if it has to arrive by December 25, order in the first half of December. Returns are free within the US for 30 days.
- When you can't tell what they'd use, a gift card is fine. We sell a digital Ophaya gift card in $25, $50, $100 and $150, though for most engineers a hardware store card will get more use.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Christmas gift for an engineer?
For a student, we'd start with a calculator from the NCEES list if they don't have one, or the Arduino starter kit. For a working engineer, a precision screwdriver kit or one of the books above.
What are good gifts for mechanical and civil engineers?
Mechanical engineers tend to get use out of digital calipers, a precision screwdriver kit or J. E. Gordon's Structures. For a civil engineer, try To Engineer Is Human or a headlamp for site visits, plus an FE-approved calculator if they're still a student.
Which calculators are allowed on the FE exam?
Only the models NCEES lists. For 2026 exams, that's Casio fx-115 and fx-991 models, the HP 33s and HP 35s, and TI-30X and TI-36X models. NCEES labels the list by exam year, so check its exams page again before you buy.
Is a smart pen a good gift for an engineering student?
It is for one who works problems and sketches on paper and wants a copy to share. Diagrams and written notes come through well, but OCR won't reliably convert equations, so pages of math are best kept as PDF or PNG. Our checklist on whether a smart pen is a good gift covers what to ask first, and our gifts for college students guide has ideas for the dorm and finals week.
