Gifts for College Students: Useful Ideas for Class, the Dorm and Finals (2026)

The most useful gifts for college students fix something that bothers them every week: a dim dorm room, a roommate who goes to bed at 3 a.m., a phone cable that won't reach a lofted bed, or a pile of lecture notes they can't search. Most of those fixes cost under $50, like a desk lamp with a warm setting, earplugs and a sleep mask, a long charging cable or a care package timed for finals. Bigger gifts such as noise-cancelling headphones or a tablet are worth it only when you know how the student studies.

We make Ophaya smart pens, so weigh our pick accordingly. Our pen is one item under studying and class, and nearly everything else on this list is something we don't sell. Christmas gifts for college students also run into a timing problem: for a lot of students, December means exams and then a trip home, which changes both what helps and where you ship it.

Gifts for studying and class

A smart pen, for a student who writes notes by hand

The Ophaya 3-in-1 set ($99.95) is our smart pen with a dot-code notebook and a 10-inch LCD writing tablet. The pen writes in ink and syncs the handwriting over Bluetooth to the free Ophaya Pro+ app, so the student needs a phone or tablet, and it only captures writing on Ophaya dot-code paper or the Ophaya tablet. We think it fits a lecture-heavy schedule, a course full of diagrams like organic chemistry, or a student with a note-taking accommodation who wants a digital copy. A student who types every note, or already owns an iPad and Apple Pencil, won't need it. Our guide to a smart pen for college students goes into who gets the most out of one.

The calculator their course actually uses

A student taking calculus, chemistry or physics may need a calculator, so ask which model their course uses before you buy one. A humanities major won't need it, and neither will someone who still has a working one from high school.

A laptop stand and a separate keyboard

For a student who writes long papers at a desk, a stand raises the screen and a separate keyboard keeps their hands at desk height, which is better than hunching over a laptop for a whole evening. Nobody gets excited unwrapping one, but it ends up on the desk every day. Leave it off the list if they do most of their work in the library or a cafe and carry everything in a backpack.

Gifts for the dorm room

A surge-protected power strip

A dorm desk usually has more things to charge than outlets to plug them into, and schools set rules about how students handle that. The only extension cord Brown University allows in its residence halls is a grounded, 15-amp rated surge protector, and home-style extension cords are banned, according to its restricted items list. Look up the student's own school list before buying, and ask whether they already brought one in August.

A desk lamp with a warm setting

One overhead light is hard to read under late at night, and some rooms don't have one at all. Fordham's move-in list tells residents of some halls to bring lamps because there is no overhead lighting. Get an LED lamp with a movable arm and a warm setting, and avoid halogen, which both Fordham and Brown prohibit in residence halls.

A mattress topper, after you check the bed size

If they've complained about the dorm mattress, a topper is the usual fix. Fordham allows toppers but not personal mattresses, and it asks students to bring Twin XL sheets (36 by 80 inches), so buy for that size if it matches their school. For a student in an off-campus apartment with their own bed, pick something else.

Gifts for staying rested and fed during finals

Earplugs and a sleep mask

The CDC recommends 7 or more hours of sleep for adults 18 to 60, which is hard to get when a roommate studies with the light on until 2 a.m. Foam earplugs and a contoured sleep mask cost little and fit in a desk drawer. A student with a single room who already sleeps well can do without them.

A finals care package

Pack food they'll eat at 11 p.m. (instant oatmeal, granola bars, good tea or coffee) and a short note from home. Aim for it to arrive the week before exams, since during exam week they may not get to the mailroom. If they commute from home, skip the shipping and keep the fridge full instead.

Money on their campus dining account

Check whether their school takes deposits from family. At the University of New Hampshire, family or friends can add Dining Dollars online with the student's name and ID number, and the balance carries from fall to spring but expires in May and isn't refundable. This one suits a student on a meal plan who runs low by December, not one who cooks in an off-campus apartment.

Small gifts under $25

Gift Good for Skip if
Index cards and a set of colored pens Memorizing terms for a language or anatomy class They only study with a flashcard app
A mechanical kitchen timer Working in 25-minute blocks without picking up the phone They already have a focus routine that works
A 10-foot charging cable A lofted bed or an outlet behind the desk Their outlet is right next to the bed
Boogie Board Basics LCD writing board (list price $16.99 at our October 2026 check) Math scratch work and quick sketches They want to keep their work, since the board can't save pages
A pocket umbrella Walking between classes on a big campus They drive to campus

A bigger gift, if you know how they study

Noise-cancelling headphones

For a student who shares a room or lives on a loud floor, this is the bigger gift we'd pick. They also make a long bus ride or the flight home quieter. If they study in a silent library and already like their earbuds, spend the money elsewhere.

A tablet with a pen, for a student who reads PDFs

If their readings arrive as PDFs and they want to write on them, a pen tablet makes sense. At our October 2026 check, the iPad (A16) started at $449 and the Apple Pencil (USB-C) was $79. The reMarkable Paper Pure, an E Ink tablet with fewer distractions, started at $399 with its Marker included, though handwriting search is part of reMarkable's paid Connect subscription. Skip both if the reading list is printed books or they already do everything on a laptop. Our study gadgets guide compares the options by job.

Before you buy: a few practical checks

Ask what devices they use. Anything that runs through an app needs a phone or laptop it supports, and a student with an old phone may not want one more app to manage.

Read the housing rules before buying anything that plugs in or burns. Candles are the common miss: Brown's list bans candles of all kinds, birthday cake candles included.

Ship to where they'll be on December 25, because a box sent to campus late in the month may sit there until they're back. If it has to arrive by December 25, order in the first half of December, and look up the store's return window before you pay. On ophaya.com, US orders ship within 48 hours (transit time is extra), and returns are free within the US for 30 days.

When you're unsure, a gift card from a store they already use is better than a guess. We sell a digital Ophaya gift card in $25, $50, $100 and $150 amounts, but for most students a card for their usual coffee place or the campus bookstore will get more use.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Christmas gift for a college student?

Pick something that solves a daily annoyance, like bad light at the desk, a noisy room or a phone that dies overnight. A care package timed for finals is hard to get wrong. If they share a loud room, noise-cancelling headphones are the bigger version of the same idea, and if you don't know their routine, a gift card is safer than guessing.

What can I get a college student for under $50?

Combine two or three small things, such as index cards, colored pens and a kitchen timer, or earplugs, a sleep mask and a 10-foot charging cable. A finals care package or a deposit on their dining account works at any amount.

What shouldn't I buy for a student living in a dorm?

Check the housing rules before buying candles, halogen lamps, space heaters or cooking appliances. Brown University prohibits candles, halogen desk lamps and portable space heaters in its residence halls, and it doesn't allow hot plates or toaster ovens in student rooms.

Is a smart pen a good gift for a college student?

For a student who takes notes by hand and wants a digital copy of them, yes. It's a poor fit for one who types everything, owns an iPad and Apple Pencil, or doesn't want to write in special notebooks. The research on handwriting vs typing notes is mixed, so go by how they already work. If they plan to record lectures in the app, they should ask the instructor first, and our guide on how to record lectures covers the rest. For a longer checklist, see our guide to whether a smart pen is a good gift.
