Do you need to keep what you write?
This is the question that splits the category. A basic LCD board is a reusable whiteboard: once you press erase, the page is gone. That is fine for a sum or a phone number you need for ten minutes, and frustrating for the idea you later wish you had kept.
Scan-to-save boards solve part of the problem. You open the app, photograph the page and save it as a PDF or image before you erase. You still have to remember to scan, and what you keep is a picture of the page.
The Ophaya tablet works differently because you write on it with the Ophaya smart pen. The pen captures each stroke and streams it to the Ophaya Pro+ app in real time, so the page is already on your phone while you are writing. Tap to save the page, press erase, and the tablet is blank again. The one habit to build is simple: save before you erase.
A saved tablet page is treated like any other Ophaya note. You can convert the handwriting to searchable text with OCR and export it as PDF, Word, PNG, GIF or MP4. The pen can also store around 1,000 pages offline and sync them when you reconnect.
E-ink tablets keep every page on the device and organize them into notebooks. Cloud features vary by brand. reMarkable, for example, offers an optional Connect subscription at $3.99 a month after a 50-day free trial, so check which features you would actually use before you budget for it.
Do you also read and mark up documents?
If you want to open PDFs, annotate reports or read books on the same device, an e-ink tablet is the right category. Amazon describes Kindle Scribe as a device for writing in notebooks, documents and books, and reMarkable positions its tablets as a replacement for notes and printed documents.
The Ophaya tablet does not display files. It is a writing surface, and the app on your phone or tablet is where your pages live. If documents are central to your work, that difference matters more than price.
How should it feel to write on?
E-ink makers design their screens to feel close to pen on paper, and those tablets are also the most expensive option here. An LCD tablet is a smooth, pressure-sensitive screen; the Ophaya tablet shows clear blue-green lines as you write. If surface texture is your top priority, try an e-ink tablet in a store before you decide.
If you want real ink on real paper some of the time, the Ophaya 3-in-1 set includes the smart pen, a dot-code notebook and the 10-inch LCD tablet. Both surfaces sync to the same app, so you can use the tablet for everyday volume and the notebook when the physical page matters.
What it costs to run
A basic or scan-to-save LCD board costs what you pay for it and little after that. Most run on a small replaceable coin battery.
With the Ophaya tablet you pay for the set, and the app doesn't charge a subscription for syncing, OCR or audio recording. The tablet runs on a coin battery that lasts around a year, the pen charges over USB-C, and tablet notes use no paper.
E-ink tablets cost the most upfront, and some brands add an optional subscription on top.
Which writing tablet should you buy?
If everything you write is scratch work, a basic LCD board is enough. Our Boogie Board alternatives guide says when one of those is the right call.
If you want to keep a page now and then, a scan-to-save board works, as long as you remember to scan before you erase.
For handwritten notes every day that you want saved and searchable without buying paper, we'd pick an LCD tablet with a smart pen, such as the Ophaya Smart Pen + LCD Writing Tablet set. The checklist for buying an LCD writing tablet covers size, lock buttons and batteries.
If you'll spend as much time reading PDFs as writing, get an e-ink tablet such as reMarkable or Kindle Scribe. We line all of these up in what is a digital notepad.
Not sure the smart pen part is for you? Our guide to how LCD writing tablets work covers the technical side, and what a smart pen is explains how the pen captures your writing.
