Bluetooth Pen for Laptop: Which Kind Actually Works With Your Computer

A Bluetooth pen only works with a laptop that can read it, so start with the computer, not the pen. A touchscreen Windows laptop or 2-in-1 needs an active pen that matches its screen, such as Microsoft's Surface Slim Pen. A Chromebook needs a USI stylus. A laptop without a pen-enabled screen,...

A laptop without a pen-enabled screen, MacBooks included, needs a pen tablet on the desk or an iPad used as a second display. To write on paper and end up with files on your laptop, use a smart pen, which works through your phone.

We make Ophaya smart pens, which sit in that last group, so weigh our view with that in mind. For writing or drawing on a screen, a stylus, pen tablet or iPad is the better buy. Prices below are list prices on official stores at our October 1, 2026 check.

Why Bluetooth is the wrong thing to shop for

Search for a Bluetooth pen and you'll get three products mixed together: styluses for touchscreens, pen tablets that sit next to the keyboard, and smart pens that write on paper. Bluetooth plays a small part in most of them.

On a Windows laptop, the screen has to support the pen. Microsoft tells you to check that your laptop supports the same Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) version as the pen. Its Surface Slim Pen help page says pairing "lets you use the pen's shortcut button," and its pen design guide describes that tail button as sending keyboard shortcuts over Bluetooth LE. Pair the pen anyway, since Windows asks you to, but pairing can't make a pen work on a screen that wasn't built for one. Google is blunter. Its stylus help page says, "You can't use Bluetooth styluses with Chromebooks."

Touchscreen Windows laptops, 2-in-1s and Chromebooks

A touchscreen is not always a pen screen, so look up your exact model on the maker's site. Microsoft says a Surface Pen may work on other Windows 10 or 11 PCs that support MPP, as long as the versions match. The current Surface Slim Pen uses MPP v2.6. If your laptop maker sells a pen for your model, we think that is the safest match.

The Surface Slim Pen is $129.99 at Microsoft's store, with 4,096 pressure levels, haptic feedback and a rechargeable battery. Windows' pen menu opens OneNote, Whiteboard, Snipping Tool and Journal by default, and Microsoft says you can convert handwriting to text.

On a Chromebook, look for Universal Stylus Initiative (USI) support. Google keeps a list of compatible models split into USI 1.0 and USI 2.0, so find yours and buy a pen for that version. The Lenovo USI Pen 2, a USI 2.0 pen for ChromeOS, is $49.99. Google also warns that rubber-tipped capacitive styluses sometimes don't work well.

Laptops without a touchscreen: a pen tablet

A stylus does nothing on an ordinary laptop display. The usual answer is a pen tablet (also called a drawing or graphics tablet), a flat pad that connects by USB or Bluetooth. You write on the pad and the cursor moves on the screen. Watching the screen while your hand stays on the desk takes practice, so in our view a pen tablet suits signatures, sketches and quick markup better than an hour of lecture notes.

The Huion Inspiroy 2 S is a small wired USB-C tablet with a battery-free pen for Windows, macOS and Android. Its regular price is $49.99, and it was on sale for $44.99 when we checked. The Wacom Intuos Small Bluetooth is $79.95. It pairs over Bluetooth or plugs in with the included USB cable, works with Mac, PC, Chromebook and select Android devices, and its pen needs no battery.

To see the ink under the pen tip, get a pen display, which has its own screen. The Wacom One 14 is $299.95 with the pen. It runs on one USB-C cable if your laptop's port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode (Wacom sells a converter kit for laptops that don't).

MacBooks: a pen tablet or an iPad with Sidecar

MacBooks don't have touchscreens. Apple's current MacBook Pro spec page lists none, so no stylus writes on the display. One route is a pen tablet that lists macOS, like the two above.

The other is Sidecar, which turns an iPad into a second display for a Mac. Apple says you can use Apple Pencil to write, sketch and mark up documents and see the changes live on your Mac. It works wirelessly within 10 meters (30 feet) or over USB, and both devices must use the same Apple Account. Apple's page lists which Macs and iPads qualify.

If you don't own an iPad, this route is expensive. The iPad (A16) starts at $449, and the Apple Pencil (USB-C) that works with it is $79. We compare the iPad with writing on paper in smart pen vs iPad and Apple Pencil.

Paper smart pens and how notes reach your laptop

A smart pen works the other way around: you write in ink on paper, and the pen records your strokes. The Ophaya pen has an infrared camera that reads a printed dot pattern, so it captures handwriting only on Ophaya dot-code notebooks or the Ophaya LCD writing tablet. Ordinary paper takes the ink, but nothing is captured digitally. Our guide what is a smart pen explains the dot pattern, and how digital pens work compares the technologies.

Laptop shoppers should know this part. The Ophaya pen syncs over Bluetooth to the free Ophaya Pro+ app on iPhone, iPad or Android, so it pairs with your phone or tablet, not your laptop. To get a page onto your computer, export it from the app as a PDF, Word file or PNG, then move that file the way you move any file from your phone. If the phone isn't connected while you write, the pen stores about 1,000 pages and syncs them when you reconnect. The app's OCR turns handwriting into editable text, which you should check before sharing. Our guide on how to convert handwriting to text covers free options for pages you already wrote.

Export formats in the Ophaya app include PDF, Word, GIF and MP4.

If you want smart pen software that runs on the computer itself, Livescribe is the better fit. Livescribe lists its Echo 2 ($119.95) as compatible with Livescribe+ software for Mac and Windows as well as iOS and Android.

Which one should you buy?

If your Windows laptop has a pen-enabled touchscreen, buy a pen that matches its protocol, ideally the one the maker sells for your model. On a Chromebook, check Google's USI list and buy a pen of the matching version, and skip anything sold as a Bluetooth stylus.

If your laptop has no pen screen and you want to sign forms, sketch a diagram for a slide or mark up a contract, get a pen tablet. A small one in the $50 to $80 range is plenty for handwriting. We'd only pay for a pen display if you'll draw for hours. If you own a Mac and an iPad, set up Sidecar first.

If you take handwritten notes in lectures or client meetings and want them on your laptop afterward, a paper smart pen fits, as long as you're fine with the notes passing through your phone. If you need desktop software for the pen itself, Livescribe is the better fit, though the Echo 2 was sold out on Livescribe's US store at our check. If a separate notes device appeals to you, our note taking tablet guide compares iPads, e-ink tablets and smart pen setups.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any Bluetooth stylus on my laptop?

No. The screen has to support the pen's protocol, and an ordinary laptop display can't sense a stylus at all. Check your laptop's spec page for MPP, USI or another named pen protocol before you buy.

Can I use an Apple Pencil on a MacBook?

Not on the MacBook screen. You can use it on an iPad running Sidecar, and Apple says your writing and markup show up live on the Mac.

Does the Ophaya smart pen connect to a laptop?

The pen syncs to the Ophaya Pro+ app on iPhone, iPad or Android. To get notes onto a laptop, export them from the app as PDF, Word or PNG files and send them from your phone or tablet.

What is the cheapest way to write on a laptop without a touchscreen?

A small wired pen tablet, like Huion's Inspiroy 2 S. Install the maker's driver and write your name a dozen times before you judge it. Looking at the screen while your hand is on the desk takes a few sessions to get used to.
